Usually when we receive a press release it’s full of words like ‘exciting’, ‘amazing’, ‘the best thing since sliced bread’, ok so maybe we made that last one up but you get the idea.
Usually manufacturers are so quick to want to point out the slightest change on their new bike, no matter how insignificant it is to you, the rider.
‘We’ve installed a cup holder’ they cry, ok again, maybe we’ve made that up but, usually, it’s that kind of rubbish that’s spouted at us day-in day-out.
So, when Harley-Davidson sent us a press release recently about their new 1200C, the C standing for Custom, we we’re intrigued to know what they’d say.
Well, quite frankly, we needn’t have bothered. Harley have this new way of providing press and imagery to people such as us and, to be honest, it sucks.
The actual email you receive from them, which is all of a few lines, pretty much sums up the bike.
“New Harley-Davidson® 1200 Custom rolls wide and proud. Chrome Laced Wheels and Michelin Tyres Give 1200 Custom a New Stance.” That’s the exact wording that headlined the email, and pretty much say everything you need to know about the bike for 2011.
The bike has; new ‘chrome laced’ wheels with Michelin ‘Scorcher’ (really?) tyres, a pull-back handlebar (a what?), wider fork spacing and polished triple clamps (sounds masochistic), reshaped classic Sportster ‘eyebrow’ over the headlamp (lump of chrome) and a ‘reshaped’ LED tail lamp.
It kind of feels like Harley have turned into a football (sorry, soccer) club. Just releasing a new kit for the new season for no other reason than they know people will pay extortionate amounts of money for it regardless of if it is needed, or that the last one was only out for a nano-second.
Anyway, we’re sure people will lap it up. Who wouldn’t want a smaller rear light, a scorcher tyre and a pull-back handlebar?
